Polri & Forestry Ministry Unite to Protect Indonesia’s Forests
Lamseen – The National Police (Polri) and the Ministry of Forestry have renewed their commitment to safeguarding Indonesia’s forests by extending a memorandum of understanding (MoU). The agreement was signed by Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni and National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo at the Polri Headquarters.
During the signing, Police Chief Prabowo emphasized the strategic importance of this collaboration, highlighting its role in reinforcing law enforcement measures against illegal logging, land encroachment, and environmental destruction. He also underscored the necessity of proactive measures to prevent forest and land fires, particularly as the country shifts from the rainy to the dry season.
“This agreement enhances our joint efforts in enforcing forestry laws. The National Police stands ready to support and strengthen forest protection initiatives across Indonesia,” Prabowo stated.
As climate patterns shift, the risk of forest and land fires increases, posing severe threats to Indonesia’s rich biodiversity and local communities. Recognizing this, the MoU outlines a comprehensive strategy for early detection, fire prevention, and swift response efforts.
The agreement also expands Polri’s authority in assisting the Ministry of Forestry in investigating and prosecuting environmental crimes. By leveraging law enforcement resources, the collaboration aims to enhance surveillance operations, deploy rapid-response teams, and strengthen legal actions against illegal deforestation and forest degradation.
Minister Raja Juli Antoni emphasized that sustainable forest management is critical to national economic and environmental stability. “Protecting our forests is a shared responsibility. By working together with Polri, we ensure that Indonesia’s natural resources are preserved for future generations,” he stated.
With this renewed partnership, Polri and the Ministry of Forestry reaffirm their dedication to protecting Indonesia’s forests through stronger enforcement, community engagement, and sustainable conservation practices.

In addition to reinforcing forestry law enforcement, Polri and the Ministry of Forestry are expanding their collaboration to support national food security. National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo highlighted the potential for utilizing designated forest areas for agricultural activities that align with sustainability efforts.
“There are specific forest zones where we can work together to cultivate essential crops such as corn or other agricultural products that contribute to national food security,” Prabowo stated.
This initiative aims to optimize land use while maintaining environmental balance, ensuring that agricultural expansion does not lead to deforestation or ecological degradation. The cooperation also involves deploying law enforcement resources to safeguard designated agricultural zones from illegal encroachment and land disputes.
Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni acknowledged the significant challenges facing Indonesia’s forestry sector, particularly concerning forest and land fires, illegal logging, and wildlife trafficking. He emphasized that limited human resources within the ministry make it crucial to work alongside Polri, whose personnel can reach even the most remote villages.
“With our workforce constraints, collaboration with Polri, which has an extensive network across Indonesia, will significantly enhance our ability to protect forests,” Antoni said.
Beyond land protection, the partnership focuses on preserving Indonesia’s biodiversity. Minister Antoni stressed the importance of cracking down on illegal wildlife trade and plant smuggling, which threaten many of the country’s endangered species.
“This cooperation strengthens law enforcement actions against those who smuggle protected plants and animals,” Antoni asserted.
By expanding their joint efforts, Polri and the Ministry of Forestry aim to build a more sustainable approach to forest conservation while supporting food security initiatives and reinforcing environmental protection laws.
