Lamseen – Indonesia’s Ministry of Transmigration aims to transform transmigration areas into cattle farming hubs to address the nation’s significant supply gaps in beef and milk. This initiative supports the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program, designed to enhance nutritional access nationwide.
Deputy Minister of Transmigration Viva Yoga Mauladi revealed that the country produces only 370,000 tons of beef annually, while the demand reaches 770,000 tons, creating a deficit of 400,000 tons. Similarly, milk production stands at just 1 million tons annually, far below the 4.7 million tons required, leaving a gap of 3.7 million tons.

Deputy Minister of Transmigration Viva Yoga Mauladi emphasized the strong market potential for beef and milk, driven by the government’s Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program, which was launched on January 6. The program aims to meet the nutritional needs of the population while creating opportunities for the livestock industry.
Mauladi stated that the livestock sub-sector plays a critical role in supplying animal protein, increasing farmers’ income, stimulating rural economies, generating jobs, and driving the food processing industry. He outlined strategies to achieve self-sufficiency in beef and milk, including optimizing cattle reproduction and strengthening farmers’ institutional frameworks.
Mauladi identified transmigration areas as ideal locations for cattle farming due to their vast land resources and access to abundant natural feed. He revealed plans for the Ministry of Transmigration to collaborate with other government bodies, community organizations, academics, and NGOs to turn these areas into thriving hubs for cattle production.
The initiative requires realistic regulations, measurable programs, and a well-defined budget to succeed. “We need participation from all stakeholders, including the community and non-governmental organizations, to ensure the success of this initiative,” Mauladi said. By mobilizing resources and cooperation, the government aims to close the gaps in beef and milk production, contributing to food security and economic development in rural areas.
